Who they are
Cigna operates as The Cigna Group. Its health-services arm is Evernorth, which includes Evernorth Behavioral Health — the successor to Cigna Behavioral Health, rebranded around 2020.
The behavioral health contracting entity
Cigna's structure is a hybrid. Evernorth is an in-house subsidiary (Evernorth and Cigna are corporate affiliates), but the contracting entity facilities actually deal with is Evernorth Behavioral Health. That places it between Aetna (fully in-house, no separate brand) and UnitedHealthcare or Elevance (distinct network brands). Facilities may see either the Cigna or the Evernorth name on contracts. Notably, Evernorth also acts as a behavioral health manager for health plans other than Cigna — which is why facilities sometimes encounter Evernorth outside a Cigna context.
Levels of care
Evernorth contracts across the behavioral health continuum — inpatient psychiatric, detoxification, residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient. Covered benefits vary by plan.
