Point32Health manages Harvard Pilgrim's behavioral health in-house, and has since November 1, 2023, when the plan's earlier arrangement with Optum ended (October 31, 2023). That change moved the network contract, credentialing, and utilization management for behavioral health under Point32Health itself rather than a carve-out vendor. The one publicly documented exception is the Stride (HMO / HMO-POS) Medicare Advantage product, where behavioral health is still administered through United Behavioral Health, doing business as Optum. Practically: an Optum contract you signed for Harvard Pilgrim commercial members before 2023 is not the contract that governs those members now — your Harvard Pilgrim behavioral health relationship for general lines runs through Point32Health.

For commercial products, the behavioral health network is Point32Health's — administered directly, not through a rental or specialty network. Because Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts Health Plan are sibling brands under the same company, check whether your agreement covers one brand or both; Point32Health has been consolidating provider infrastructure, but participation and rates are set by the contract you signed, not by the corporate structure. The Stride Medicare Advantage product remains the exception, with its behavioral health network held through Optum. If you treat Harvard Pilgrim members who live outside New England, note that Harvard Pilgrim is not a Blue Cross Blue Shield plan — there is no BlueCard-style reciprocity to fall back on; out-of-area members are covered under the plan's own out-of-network or travel provisions.

Through Point32Health provider services — the entry point for both Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts Health Plan credentialing and contracting. Facilities and individual clinicians go through different tracks: a facility is credentialed and contracted as an organization (by tax ID and facility NPI, by level of care), while a clinician is credentialed individually and paid on a professional fee schedule. Which track you are on determines the kind of rate you end up negotiating, so confirm it before you start the paperwork. There is no single “Harvard Pilgrim rate.” A negotiated rate depends on what is being billed and how the contract structures it: the level of care (detox, residential, PHP, IOP, outpatient — or, for eating-disorder programs, the same level-of-care structure applied to that program), whether the contract pays a per diem, a case rate, or a percent of charges, the product line (commercial HMO/PPO versus Stride Medicare Advantage, which sits with a different administrator), your market within New England, and how recently the contract was negotiated. Billing structure matters too: facility rates are keyed to revenue codes and HCPCS — for example residential treatment billed under revenue codes 1001/1002 or HCPCS H0018, partial hospitalization under revenue code 0912/0913 or H0035, and intensive outpatient under 0905/0906 or H0015 — and two rates on the same code are only comparable when the rest of the contract structure matches. Professional (clinician) rates sit on a separate fee schedule entirely.
