Carelon Is Beacon: What the Rebrand Means for Your Legacy Contracts

Carelon Behavioral Health is the rebrand of Beacon Health Options. If you hold legacy Beacon paperwork, you already have a Carelon relationship — connected to Elevance's Anthem-brand Blues and one of the two largest national BH networks.

Somewhere in a lot of behavioral health facilities' files is a contract with "Beacon Health Options" on the letterhead. Many of those facilities think of it as an old, half-forgotten relationship. It isn't old, and it isn't with Beacon anymore. It's a live Carelon relationship — connected to one of the largest behavioral health networks in the country. Here's the lineage, and why it's worth understanding what you actually hold.

The lineage: from ValueOptions to Carelon

The naming has changed several times, which is exactly why it's confusing. The chain:

  • Beacon Health Strategies and ValueOptions merged to form Beacon Health Options.
  • Anthem acquired Beacon Health Options (the acquisition closed in 2020).
  • Anthem, Inc. then rebranded as Elevance Health in 2022.
  • Beacon was rebranded as Carelon Behavioral Health — Elevance's behavioral health arm.

So the entity that today calls itself Carelon Behavioral Health is the same organization that was Beacon Health Options, which was itself the combination of Beacon Health Strategies and ValueOptions. Different names, one continuous through-line.

Legacy Beacon paperwork is a Carelon relationship

Here's the practical point. Under Elevance, behavioral health for its plans is administered by Carelon. Many facilities hold legacy Beacon Health Options contracts and don't realize Carelon is the same entity — so they treat their Beacon paperwork as a dead artifact rather than the live Carelon relationship it actually is.

That misunderstanding has real consequences. If you're preparing to "get in-network with Carelon" from scratch, but you already hold a Beacon contract, you may be starting a conversation you're actually already in the middle of. When you contract for Elevance-plan behavioral health, you're contracting with Carelon — and your Beacon history is part of that relationship, not separate from it.

What Carelon is connected to

Understanding that Beacon-is-Carelon also reframes the scale of what you're dealing with. Carelon isn't a standalone regional vendor. It's the behavioral health arm of Elevance Health, and it connects to two things worth keeping in view:

  • Elevance's Anthem-brand Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, offered in 14 states — a large commercial footprint whose behavioral health runs through Carelon.
  • A national behavioral health network. Carelon's behavioral health network is national, and — alongside Optum — it's one of the two largest behavioral-health-specific networks in the country.

So a "Beacon contract" isn't a loose end. It's a thread into one of the two dominant national behavioral health networks and a 14-state Blue footprint. (For how the Anthem-brand Blues fit the broader Blue landscape, see why "Blue Cross Blue Shield" is really ~33 companies.)

Rebrands are a recurring landscape hazard

Carelon-is-Beacon is the clearest example, but it's not the only one. Behavioral health administration is full of rebrands and re-namings that leave facilities holding paperwork under a name that no longer matches the entity. Lucet, the independent administrator behind some Blues' behavioral health, is the former New Directions Behavioral Health — same phenomenon, different corner of the map.

The lesson generalizes: the name on your contract may not be the name the entity goes by today. When a network rebrands, the relationship doesn't reset — but your understanding of it can quietly fall out of date.

The takeaway

If you hold a Beacon Health Options contract, treat it as what it is: a Carelon Behavioral Health relationship, connected to Elevance's national behavioral health network and its Anthem-brand Blues. Don't negotiate as if it's a fresh start, and don't file it away as expired. Know the lineage, and you know what you're holding.

Know what your Carelon rates look like

Once you know your Beacon paperwork is a Carelon relationship, the question is where those rates stand against the market. That's what TierBench is built for. See which payers we hold rate data on, or book a 20-minute call.
